A Race To The Last Nut

The Last Nut
8x8 mixed media

Hello there! Late to post this weeks topic "Race" over at IF  but here is my little contribution. Inspired by my walks with Dukie where we've bumped into many squirrels racing up trees to grab The Last Nut for the winter. Funny how it's easy to overlook squirrels, never paying much attention to them. So now I take notice of these little guys a bit more as they run around, jumping from tree to tree, racing in circles teasing Dukie while he watches carefully hoping for that chase.

  9. OOh I love stripey socks too! This illustration is wonderful! And yes I agree that most people probably don't pay much mind to squirrels... I love to watch them in my back yard, even when they are digging it up searching for/ burying their nuts! :)

  15. So charming. And the squirrels are emphasized just enough to be noticed but not to distract from the charming little girl.

  17. Whenever I read blog posts that relate to the seasons or weather, I always have to check to see where the author is from. Living here in Florida, our change of seasons is just so different. I tend to forget that most of the U.S. has trees that are filled with brilliant leaves, starting to fall. Thanks for the reminder.

And I'll tell you a funny story about the squirrels in our yard. We bought our house with a 1000-acre "preserve" in the backyard, being told they would never build there. Well, I guess until the price is right. We now have a big housing development there, after they tore down absolutely every tree and living thing back there. When the got rid of the trees, we had a huge influx of squirrels in our backyard, looking for food. (and lots of other animals, but those are other stories) They started eating our tomatoes, green, right off the vine. I kept putting nuts out, but they got a taste of the tomatoes and wouldn't stop. The bad thing was, they took about two bites out of a tomato and threw it away!
